National Apprenticeship Week 2022 | Build The Future

It’s National Apprenticeship Week!

Now in it’s 15th year, it is a week-long celebration of apprenticeships and the benefits they offer to companies and individuals up and down the country.

This year's theme, 'Build The Future', shows how apprenticeships can help develop skills and knowledge whilst gaining practical experience and as an employer, we want to help assist our team to develop future-ready skills.

Over 20% of our workforce started here as an apprentice and progressed with us, a statistic we are hugely proud of.

In this blog, we will be highlighting one of the many success stories we have at Thorpes as a direct result of this training scheme, Contracts Manager, Tom Friel.

Tom’s Story

Starting as an apprentice joiner in May 2002, Tom completed his studies at Leicester College (formerly known as South Fields College) whilst gaining his practical experience at our old Great Glen site.

Tom developed his skills and industry knowledge in the factory for 15 years, with his final role as an experienced bench joinery, before deciding to take up a position within the office as ‘Contracts Support.’

Gaining a different perspective of what goes on behind the scenes for each project, after two years in his role in Contracts Support Tom moved into Contracts Management.

He now successfully oversees and coordinates company projects from start to finish helping turn our client’s concepts into reality, utilising his vast and varied experience to great effect.

My apprenticeship got me to where I am today and I can’t wait to grow more within my career. Thorpes has supported me throughout my challenges and they are a great team to work alongside.
— Tom Friel, Contracts Manager

Tom has worked on some of London’s most prestigious landmark projects for a range of high-ranking architects, clients, and contractors. Below shows some of the great jobs Tom has worked on.
