World Mental Health Day: Breaking Stigma and Building Support

Every year on October 10, World Mental Health Day reminds us of the importance of mental well-being and our collective responsibility to support those struggling with mental health.

Why It Matters

Mental health is as vital as physical health, yet it’s often neglected. Around 1 in 8 people worldwide experience mental health disorders, with stigma preventing many from seeking help. This year’s theme highlights mental health in the workplace and the impact environments have on our well-being.

How You Can Help:

1.       Educate Yourself: Learn about mental health and share resources to normalise the conversation.

2.       Create Safe Spaces: Encourage open discussions and support.

3.       Check In: Reach out to friends or colleagues who might be struggling.

4.       Advocate: Support mental health initiatives in workplaces and communities.

5.       Self-Care: Prioritise your own well-being to better support others.

Inspire Change

World Mental Health Day sparks global conversations and initiatives, reminding us that we are not alone. Let’s commit to advocating for mental health every day, breaking barriers, and creating a more understanding world.

Insights from Dan Sneath, Thorpe’s Mental Health First Aider

We sat down with Dan to discuss what mental health means to him and his motivation for becoming a Mental Health First Aider (MHFA).

Why did you become a MHFA?

A serious incident with a close friend motivated me to take action. I’ve witnessed family and friends struggle with various mental health issues, and my goal is to help remove the stigma surrounding mental health, empowering others to share their feelings and realise they’re not alone.

What are the benefits of becoming a MHFA?

Training as an MHFA has equipped me to recognise signs of mental health issues and understand their causes and manifestations. I’ve gained confidence in guiding others toward appropriate help and support.

How has this knowledge impacted your daily life?

It has broadened my understanding of mental health, revealing issues many overlook. This insight helps me explain symptoms and conditions to others, fostering greater awareness.

What changes should you look for in yourself and others regarding mental health?

Common signs to observe include:

1.       Significant changes in appearance or hygiene.

2.       Increased substance use or abuse.

3.       Mood swings or behavioral changes.

4.       Social withdrawal or irritability.

5.       A noticeable decline in concentration or productivity.

What activities help protect your mental health?

Spending time with my wife and two children brings me joy and peace. I also enjoy being outdoors, whether hiking or fishing. A good friend advised me to set small, achievable goals as stepping stones toward larger targets, which boosts positivity and prevents feeling overwhelmed.

How We’re Supporting

Today, Thorpes proudly partnered with the South Leicestershire Litter Wombles for a community litter pick. We believe that a clean environment nurtures a clear mind, contributing positively to mental health and well-being. Through these small acts of kindness, whether towards our planet or each other, we can make a significant impact. A huge thank you to all who participated, we even had a surprise visit from Teddington the Bear!

Together, we can break the stigma around mental health and create a supportive community for everyone.
