Hammersmith West London - Feature Wall

The Initial Brief

Located in the heart of Hammersmith, West London, this global HQs 13,000 sq ft space has recently been refurbished to improve the working environment and feel that it brings to its employees. From a visual presented by the client, Thorpes collaborated with design and build partner Morgan Lovell to develop the space to create a calm and harmonized surrounding.

Combining creativity with skillset, the space was designed to create a sense of escapism in the workplace, while maximizing the use of the area. A perfect example of this is the striking and innovative feature wall centered in the heart of the district.

The Design

From the initial visual to the 3D drawings, Thorpes and Morgan Lovell worked together to research and experiment with materials until they found the balance to harmonize design and practicality.

A bespoke 10m by 2.7m MDF formation was built to create the base of the abstract structure, before fixing constructed MDF framework ribs to build the unique shape and texture further. To finish, the MDF paneling was veneered with oak to create a uniformed feel through material cohesiveness.

The chosen use of soft features including curved edges and minimum corners create a sense of ease. Neutral and earthy tones alongside the minimalistic and spacious design help promote a calm environment in the workspace, cultivating a feeling of Zen.

The Finer Details

Thorpes collaborated with Bespoke LED Lighting to accentuate the presence of the wall, complimenting and enhancing the shape of the feature. Soft white Perspex lighting was fitted to mimic natural lighting and to create a clean and airy environment, eliminating any harshness.

Planters and a biophilic wall were placed opposite the feature, as well as other surrounding areas, to bring a sense of nature indoors. These planters contribute in aiding the absorption of background noise to help in maintaining a calm and peaceful space. They also play a practical role in the workplace by increasing productivity and creativity, as well as reducing stress.

From start to finish, the project took twenty weeks in total: four to six weeks to produce and another four to eight weeks to install.

At Thorpes, we are proud to have worked alongside Morgan Lovell in combining speed and finesse to maximize time without compromising on the quality of the work.
