Mortimer Street

A Hospitality-Led Reception Space

Contractor: Morgan Lovell

Architect: Conran and Partners

Located in the heart of London, the newly renovated offices on Mortimer Street have been thoughtfully updated to meet the needs of both employees and clients. With a brand-new reception area, this space has been designed to reflect a modern working environment, blending minimalism with impactful design elements.

The Design

The client’s vision was to create a contemporary, hospitality-inspired reception space, offering ample breakout areas to serve both colleagues and clients. The space is filled with natural light and features earthy tones and natural materials, creating a serene yet functional environment amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.

A key design feature is the unique reception desk, which blends the traditional desk with the social aspects of a table, creating a dynamic space that promotes both work and interaction. Our specialist joiners constructed the desk’s frame from MDF and finished it with Walnut panels. Partnering with GD Stone, we selected a striking piece of Italian marble for the worktop, which stands out as a focal point in the room. This bespoke desk, along with the accompanying circular table and condiment unit, brings a cohesive aesthetic to the space.

Large walnut panels run from ceiling to floor onto the side of the reception desk, contributing warmth and continuity throughout the space. Matching tables were crafted to align with these panels, giving the illusion of built-in furniture. These tables are designed to be flexible, allowing them to be moved or extended to accommodate the changing needs of the space. Additional walnut wall panels enhance the room's warm, natural feel.

The reception area also features unique seating planters, developed in collaboration with Abacus, who supplied the upholstery. These planters house real trees, carefully lifted through the retractable roof via cranes and placed inside the planters, offering a striking connection to nature.

This project, which took five months to complete from design to build, was carried out during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. To ensure safety and minimise risk, our team worked in small bubbles, which included a trip to Italy with the client, where Project Manager Leigh Palmer adhered to strict health and safety protocols.

It was a pleasure to collaborate with Morgan Lovell and Conran and Partners. Watching this space come to life was incredibly rewarding, and it’s a testament to the transformative power of natural materials in a vibrant city like London.
